Francis Bacon is one of the most important figure and portrait painters in Britain in the 20th century. His paintings of the human form have an unparalleled and disturbing intensity that frequently verges on the violent, and his subjects always appear harshly lit. Bacon never trifled with any of the superficialities of presentation. He painted as if to pierce the outer layers and reveal the deepest levels to be found in the psyche of his sitter. Some of his works were based on x-ray plates and photographs; one of Bacon’s sources being Muybridge’s famous photographic studies of motion. The artist frequently depicted movement with a blurring of features and succeeded in conveying an intensity of feeling in just a few long and powerful brush strokes.
This important, new, illustrated survey of Bacon, published four years after the artist’s death, places all aspects of his output in relation to his life, freely examining in depth the effects of his homosexuality and raunchy living style on his painting. Wieland Schmied, the internationally acclaimed author of over 100 titles on contemporary art who has studied Bacon for many years, has written a fascinating and compelling text. Some excerpts were published in a highly regarded book in 1985 which, however, appeared only in German.
